Horse Riding in Langkawi

Langkawi has one of the best horseback riding trails in the world but not many people are aware of that.

There is a new 75km long Perdana Trail that run across the virgin rainforests, covering the 550 million-year-old Mat Chinchang mountain range. It is unique and extreme! Perhaps... one of the best in the world.

The trail was outlined with the help of two teams, namely HM Sutera and Langkawi Development Authority’s Be-ringin Adventure Team. Not a single tree was felled when the trail was charted from the Seven Wells Waterfall through the jungles, to Datai and through the mountain overlooking the Berjaya Beach Resort.

You will find it is exhilarating horse riding through the virgin jungle across the mountain range. It would take you a whole day!

The Perdana Trail, which includes climbing up the 650m-high summit, is not for novice horse riders as it is regarded as an extreme trail.

As a novice rider, you can opt for the normal trail that covers the jungle at the foot of the mountain and the beach. You will only take about an hour to trek the 15km low land trail on horse.

The idea to create the horse-riding trail was mooted by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, an avid horseman. Dr Mahathir is keen on promoting Langkawi as a global horse-riding destination.

Interested in learning horse riding? Get some horse riding lessons from horseman Muhammad Hamzah Abdullah, who operates the Island Horses Riding Centre at Seven Wells Langkawi. A 15-hour lesson costs about RM1,050. Horse rental rate is RM150 an hour. For more details, you can call him at 04-955 8753.

After the tiring ride, you can stop over at the Island Horses Restaurant and enjoy a wide array of local cuisine.

You can also learn horse-riding or hire a horse for your ride from the Mutiara Burau Bay Equestrian Centre. This horse-riding centre was opened in 2004.

The equestrian centre has superb facilities as well as an impressive stable of horses. Most of the horses are ex-race horses that have been rehabilitated and retrained for jungle rides. There are ponies for kids too!

You can ride a horse under the supervision of a dedicated handler, going on a ride through Langkawi’s lush jungle and up the peak of a picturesque mountain. In addition, the professional horse handlers will teach you how to properly ride and steer.

Prices start from a few Ringgit for pony rides to RM399 for riding up the Gunung Raya Trail, which leads to the peak of the mountain. Rides can be as short as 45 minutes for novices, or as long as a five-hour romp through the higher reaches of the rainforest where your destination is a cool, clear stream where you can go for a refreshing dip.

But if you just want to watch some dude riding a horse, you can just go to Pantai Kok and hang out there!
