Rebak Resort Reopens

The Rebak Island Resort in Langkawi has had a facelift under its new management Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, one of India’s finest luxury hoteliers.

The refurbished island resort was officially launched at the Carcosa Seri Negara by Taj chief operating officer, leisure hotels, Jyothi Narang.

Rebak Island Resort has 82 rooms featuring 16 superior garden room, 32 superior sea view rooms, 10 deluxe sea-facing rooms, 10 deluxe one-bedroom villas and four deluxe two-bedroom villas. Most rooms have a clear view of the Senari Straits.

Room rates are from US$200 to US$400. For Malaysians, an introductory rate of RM360 is being offered until Sept 30 this year.

A new bar called Minum Minum has been installed along side Senari, an all-day dining restaurant that serves oriental, Indian and continental specialities. Another dining spot called the Boardwalk with an enchanting view of the Marina serves regional curries and barbecue delicacies.

Mu'adzam Shah Trophy

The Sultan of Kedah will not be taking part in the Mu'adzam Shah Trophy golf tournament at the Gunung Raya golf course in Langkawi this Saturday.

This will be the first time in six years that Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah will miss the tournament organised by Bayview Hotel Langkawi.

The Sultan was among 13 invited guests for the 18-hole golf tournament which has attracted 96 golfers.

The 79-year-old Ruler was warded at the Alor Star Hospital on Monday after he came down with flu and discharged yesterday afternoon.

Langkawi Geopark At LID

The Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) will promote Langkawi Geopark, a new brand name for the legendary island, at the Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) 2007 to be held here from Aug 5 to 8.

The Lada Geopark Unit will make available pictures and information about the geological sites as well as distribute about 2,000 pamphlets at the Berjaya Beach Resort, the venue of LID 2007.

The Langkawi Geopark, comprising all of the 99 islands in the Langkawi archipelago, was declared the world's 52nd and Southeast Asia's first geopark by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation on June 1.

Lada would put up signages, rest areas, recreational facilities and jungle treks leading to the lakes and viewing towers for the convenience of visitors to the geopark.

No Subsidy For Ferry

The Finance Ministry was firm on its policy not to grant such a subsidy for ferries plying across the sea.

Langkawi ferry operators had on June 16 imposed a fuel surcharge of RM2 on each passenger without permission from the Transport Ministry but stopped doing so following warning from the ministry.

Tourism Training Centre

A RM6 million tourism training centre will be built on Langkawi soon.

This training centre would help to produce skilled workers for the country's hospitality and tourism industry.

Lada had allocated RM16.9 million to implement various tourism-related projects in Langkawi which is the world's 52nd and Southeast Asia's first geopark following its listing in the Unesco Global Network of Geoparks on June 1.

Langkawi International Dialogue

Some 300 local and international journalists are expected to converge in Langkawi for the Aug 6-8 forum to discuss and seek ways to manage challenges such as poverty eradication, human capital development and capacity building.

Usually, heads of government, mainly from Africa, also use LID as an opportunity for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Besides Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar will also moderate the interaction among captains of industry, labour leaders, social groups and youths on socio-economic development.

Inaugurated in 1995 and premised on smart partnership principles, especially among developing countries, LID has spawned similar dialogues in Southern and East Africa.

For the first time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been entrusted with organising the LID 2007. Previously, LID was hosted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Prime Minister's Department.

The national news agency, BERNAMA, is host news agency for LID 2007 and will manage the International Media Centre.

RTM, the official broadcaster, will provide the facilities for the electronic media.

Langkawi Cooperative

The tourism boom has made low-cost dormitories operated by the Langkawi District Development Cooperative a popular lodging among tourists. The dormitories in Kuah had generated a profit of RM30,000 in its first year of operation.

The cooperative offers dormitories at daily rates of between RM13 and RM50 and can accommodate 110 visitors in one night.

To increase its revenue, the cooperative is into the motor-cycle sales business and is also operating a petrol kiosk.

Agenda At Langkawi Dialogue

Capacity building, human capital development and poverty eradication will top the agenda in next month's Langkawi International Dialogue.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar described them as not only issues of concern to developing countries but also as essential components in firming up South-South cooperation.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament lobby, Syed Hamid said so far 15 heads of government have confirmed attendance in this year's LID.

Eleven are from Commonwealth states while the others were specially invited by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. They are from Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh and Gambia.

About 500 participants are expected at the 8th LID from Aug 6-8 at Berjaya Langkawi Beach & Spa Resort.

Cleanliness For LID 2007

The Langkawi Municipal Council has been told to ensure cleanliness at all tourist spots and main roads on the island.

The state government would no longer tolerate uncleanliness as it prepared to welcome heads of governments and delegations from 42 countries for the five-day Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) beginning on Aug 5.

The council must ensure that the island is always clean and beautiful to safeguard Langkawi's image as a tourist haven.

Meanwhile, Geopark Hotel which has been chosen as the LID 2007 secretariat, will introduce elephant rides in conjuntion with the event.

The 30-room hotel, located at the Teluk Burau Oriental Village and near the Gunung Mat Chinchang Cable Car, said it was offering a promotional package of RM388 per room for two nights, a cable-car ride and an elephant ride for two persons

LID Delegates To Visit Galeria

The Galeria Perdana which houses more than 1,000 collections of memorabilia of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, will be among the stops for the wives of the 42 heads of countries who will converge at the island for this year's Langkawi International Dialogue from Aug 5-10.

Located at Kilim, Ayer Hangat, the gallery showcases 1,780 memorabilia items to visitors including photographs, paintings, medals, stamp albums, handicraft, certificates, coins, copper and pewter wares, greeting cards, vehicles and ceramics.

The RM50 million gallery which was opened to the public in 1996 has registered a total of 280,000 visitors so far from various parts of the world.

Among other places expected to be visited by the LID delegates included the site of a poverty eradication project and the cottage industry at Kampung Wang Tok Rendong Kuah, as well as the Kompleks Budaya Kraf in Teluk Yu.

The delegates will also get to witness the traditional harvesting of padi at Pantai Cenang as well as visit Kota Mahsuri.

Bikers Rally For Charity

Harley Davidson motorcycle owners from 10 countries have confirmed their participation in the 4th Harley Owners Group (HOG) Malaysia Chapter Rally from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi from Aug 28 to Sept 2.

Participants from the United States, Germany, England, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Thailand will join their Malaysian counterparts for the rally, which is jointly organised with Tourism Malaysia Kedah State, Langkawi Development Authority (Lada), Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Langkawi and Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah.

The convoy will leave Holiday Villa Subang on Aug 28 and is expected to arrive at Holiday Villa Resorts and Spa Langkawi the following day. The group will visit tourist destinations around the island before returning to Kuala Lumpur on Sept 2.

The rally last year, which involved 114 bikers, made it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the "Largest Harley Davidson gathering in Malaysia". The organisers are expecting about 300 bikers this year.
